Located in southwest Edmonton, the Terwillegar Servicing Concept Design Brief is bordered on the southeast by the MacTaggart neighbourhood (SCDB). The Terwillegar SCDB plans to include seven neighbourhoods, including MacTaggart. Whitemud Creek Ravine, Rabbit Hill Road, MacTaggart Road, and the Anthony Henday ring road all encircle MacTaggart to some extent.
After the City Council approved the MacTaggart Neighbourhood Area Structure Plan (NASP) in 2005, work on building the new neighbourhood got under way relatively quickly. All of the residences in MacTaggart were single-detached as of 2006. The neighbourhood is expected to have a mix of housing types, including single- and semi-detached homes, row homes, stacked row homes, and low-rise apartments, with 60% of the homes being low-density and 40% being medium-density.
The goal for MacTaggart is to build a neighbourhood that includes a compact range of land uses and encourages pedestrian and bicycle transit within the neighbourhood and into neighbouring neighbourhoods, even if parks, recreational facilities, and commercial services have not yet been finished. In the northeastern portion of the neighbourhood, a school and park will be constructed. The Whitemud Creek Ravine's proximity to the neighbourhood gives locals valuable access to outside natural amenities.
The Terwillegar Towne neighbourhood, which includes business facilities and services along 23rd Avenue, is situated to the southeast of the MacTaggart neighbourhood. Along 23rd Avenue are the Leger transit hub and new southwest recreation centre. Anthony Henday Drive and Rabbit Hill Road provide residents with access to amenities located around the city.
The company MacTaggart is named after Sandy Auld Mactaggart, a local businessperson and philanthropist who achieved success on the provincial, national, and worldwide levels in the arts, business, and education. Sandy Auld Mactaggart emigrated to Canada at the age of one after being born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1928.
